Martin Elementary School student Kristen Adam and teacher Tiffany Van Yzendoorn teamed to create a book, Dear Celiac, for children afflicted with Celiac Disease.

Adam, a 5th grader, has Celiac and was inspired to write the book to share the message to other children with the disease that they are not alone.

Van Yzendoorn was Adam’s 3rd-grade teacher and provided illustrations for the book, which is now available on Amazon.

As Adam explained, Celiac is “not a food allergy, but it’s kind of like a food allergy.”

The disease prevents her from eating foods that contain gluten, such as most bread, pasta, pizza, candies and bakery items. The book explores her emotions while navigating the world of gluten-free living.

“Having Kristen in my class taught me a lot about Celiac Disease,” Van Yzendoorn said.

Visit the book’s Amazon page to purchase it and to read many 5-star reviews from the book’s readers, many of whom wrote that the book has been inspirational to other children with the disease.

Adam and Van Yzendoorn recently appeard on STAR 105.5 FM to promote the book. Watch video of their interview at https://www.facebook.com/star1055fm/videos/335988320371459/.
