Huntley 158 families,

As you likely know, the United States is facing an epidemic of youth vaping, or e-cigarette use. According to the U.S. Surgeon General, abuse of these products among high school students has grown by as much as 900% over the past several years. Other reports indicate up to half of middle school students have tried these products. Huntley 158 has taken a strong stance against student use of these products and has introduced a number of efforts to curb and prevent the use of these dangerous products among our student body.

We are pleased to announce that we will be working with the McHenry County Substance Abuse Coalition to pilot a new online vaping education curriculum designed to help students and families understand the dangers of vaping and learn strategies to prevent the use of these products. VapeEducate is an online course designed for middle and high school students, though its lessons are applicable to anyone wanting to inform themselves about vaping.

Course setup

The course includes six lessons on vaping, including an assessment after each unit. Students must receive at least 80% on the assessment to complete the unit. Final results are sent in real-time to administrators and parents.

Course topics

  •       What is vaping?
  •       Vaping Health Risks
  •       How Marketing Targets the Young
  •       Vape Addiction
  •       Society, Vape and You
  •       Vaping & Marijuana, THC etc.

The Substance Abuse Coalition has provided us with licenses to pilot the curriculum across the middle and high schools. We are currently in the process of determining how best to roll out this program to provide maximum benefit as well as to assess its efficacy in aiding students. The program will supplement our ongoing vaping education efforts in school.
