Vanguard Vision is a revolutionary program designed to help students reach their full learning potential through a competency-based approach to learning. In Vanguard Vision, students take four core courses (math, English, social studies, and science) in a competency-based environment, working with teachers as facilitators to develop their own pathways to mastery of concepts, advancing at a pace that suits their needs, and demonstrating competency through meaningful assessments.

This model is counter to the traditional, time-based model of education in which all students advance along the same learning path and take standardized assessments.

Huntley High School was accepted into the Illinois State Board of Education Competency Based Education Pilot as one of 10 school districts selected. The first cohort of student began the program in 2018-19, and the school continues the program annually with slots for up to 120 freshman students.

  • We have modeled our program off of the New Hampshire model, who is recognized as the state leading the way in this educational innovation nationally.
  • 120 incoming freshmen will be accepted into this program via a lottery each year.
