Huntley High School Teacher Dennis Brown has been named one of three Teachers of the Year by the American Lawyers Alliance, a nationwide organization that works to promote law-related education in elementary, middle, and high schools.
The organization’s Law-related Education Teacher of the Year awards were created to honor teachers who have made significant contributions in the area of law-related education and who have developed programs that have:
- Furthered the understanding of the role of the courts, law enforcement agencies and the legal profession
- Helped students recognize their responsibilities as well as their rights
- Encouraged effective law-related education programs in their schools and communities
- Increased communication among students, educators and those involved professionally in the legal system

Brown will be presented with the award in August at the Alliance’s Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
“I’m really excited and humbled to be chosen for this. I’ve been teaching law classes at HHS since 2002, and it’s pretty cool that others out there are now aware of the unique offerings in law we have available at HHS,” Brown said. “While some schools have basic law classes as part of their curricula, HHS offers Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Constitutional Law, all courses that students don’t typically see until college if not law school.”
The award is the second top teaching prize Brown has received this year. Brown, who also teaches journalism classes and serves as adviser to the award-winning Huntley Voice newsmagazine, received the Illinois Journalism Education Association’s Tidwell Award, which recognizes the top high school media educator in the state.
