MINGA: Campus Safety & Engagement Tool
For the past several years, we have used the HERO app to track students checking in and out of the building for blended learning, lunch, and to access off-campus privileges. It also manages the tracking of student behavior and discipline consequences. Over the past semester, we have explored several apps that will meet the needs of HHS students, staff and families to monitor our students’ access to the building and create a safe school environment for all. During this search process, we found a program called Minga that can continue to meet the needs of HHS’ check-in and check-out process while also providing other student engagement and event management opportunities.

For the rest of the 2022-23 school year, we will be using two of the Minga modules on a trial basis:

  • Digital student ID for the check-in and check-out process on campus
  • Digital hall passes, which allow teachers to accurately record students leaving class

Both of these Minga modules will be implemented to ensure that students entering and exiting our building safely and are not wasting time in the halls, common areas, or the restrooms when they should be in class.

At the end of this semester, we will evaluate the use of this system to determine if we will make the change from HERO to MINGA. Currently, students can access the app on their phones (optional) and their school-issued Chromebooks through Classlink. While this system does not track our students’ movement on or off of campus, it does allow us to monitor if they have entered/exited the building and/or if they are using a hall pass.

While Minga has many opportunities to increase student engagement and safety on campus, we are using this app on a very limited basis to determine its viability as a long-term solution for Huntley High School. If this system proves to be successful for our students and staff, we will communicate further updates regarding parent resources and access through Minga.

For students who use the app on their phones: Minga meets federal, provincial, and state standards for data collection, storage, and sharing. Minga never collects unnecessary information and shares it outside our school or district, including names or email addresses. Here is access to the Student Data and Privacy Guide.

Student Driving
Over the past few weeks, we have seen increased speeds and instances of negligent driving in the student parking lot during dismissal. Students are running across the parking lot to get into their cars, and some are driving erratically to exit it. In response, we have increased the supervision in the student lot and have begun suspending parking privileges and, at times, revoking parking when these behaviors occur. If you have a student driver, please remind them of the importance of driving safely to and from school and the responsibility of being behind the wheel to keep themselves and other drivers safe.

We will continue to monitor the parking lot and enforce accountability measures for student drivers.

Reminder: Take the 5Essentials Parent Survey
Have you taken the 5Essentials Survey yet? If not, please take a moment to access the survey HERE and fill it out prior to March 24, 2023.

The 5Essentials survey is a statewide effort by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) to gauge school climate and learning conditions in Illinois schools. The survey provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to have a voice in improving their schools.

Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. Feedback from the tool will be shared in reports to schools and will be reported publicly on the State School Report Card website in Fall 2023.

The District is mandated to conduct a survey of school learning conditions every year, and your participation in this effort is critical! Please note:

  • Parents/guardians with more than one child in Huntley 158 schools must take the survey for each child.
  • The survey is available in English and Spanish and is estimated to take about 10 minutes.

If you have questions, please check the ISBE website or email us at hhsprincipal@
