Huntley 158 schools have traditionally recognized veterans of the United States Armed Forces with a variety of celebrations and educational experiences within their buildings. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the District has found new ways to recognize Veterans Day.
Marlowe Middle School has for many years hosted an annual Veterans Day Breakfast and recognition ceremony, attended my more than 100 area veterans and featuring student readings, choral, and band performances. In lieu of this in-person ceremony, both Marlowe and members of the District administration team reached out to veterans who have been regular attendees of the event.
Members of the District Cabinet compiled and delivered goodie bags to the homes of area veterans and delivered letters and treats to area nursing homes serving veterans.
Students at Marlowe participated in a poem and photo contest in preparation for Veterans Day, the winning entries of which were mailed to the list of attendees from last year’s event.
At Huntley High School, Principal Marcus Belin shared a video preview of the school’s new interactive military wall of honor. The wall features a military-themed mural on which an interactive touch screen is mounted. The touch screen display showcases photos and information about HHS graduates who have enlisted in the military.
Heineman Middle School administrators shared a video expressing thanks and issued a challenge to students to reach out to veterans in their lives.
Many other schools and classrooms held virtual chats with veterans to help students understand the history and experiences of members of the Armed Forces.
